Poreč Basilica: A Church to Stop Even the Most Travel-Weary Tourist in Their Tracks.
Truth be told, I'm a bit burned out on old churches right now. Happily distracted by Poreč's many beaches, I'd spent a number of blissful days wandering around this idyllic Croatian village before I finally poked my head into the church. I didn't know it at the time, but the basilica I'd just stepped into houses one of the finest Byzantine mosaics in the world. When this travel-hardened tourist finally saw it, all I could do was plop down on the pew and stare up in wonder. Parts of the church date back to the mid-fourth century, which also make it one of the oldest and best preserved sites of its kind anywhere. It's a special place and one certainly worth visiting, even if you're currently in the throws of the worst kind of site-seeing burnout. More details at Wikipedia
